It was first published in Arabic script in 1941. The work was completed after an estimated 10 years, starting from 1936. The tafsar includes various verses from the Quran, explaining them with references to Islamic traditions and narrations of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, as well as other Sunni Islam sources. It is also one of the most popular and widely used Qur'an translations in India and Bangladesh, next to the Urdu translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali and Tajul Urdu Tafsir by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The translation was done with the objective of simplifying difficult passages of the Quran, making it easier to understand for everyday people who did not have much knowledge about Islam. The tafsir was written in the style of the classical tafsir of Ibn Kathir, which is easier to read by ordinary people. This tafsir was published in Bengali script in 1941, at the same time as an Urdu edition was published under the editorship of Amjad Ali Shah. The standard edition of Tafsir Kabīr (also known as "Kabir" or "Kitab-i-Kabīr") is now published by the Islamic Research Institute (IRI) in Bangladesh. In 1965, a short English translation from Arabic script was brought out by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall at Dar-ul-Ifta, London. This translation is not very literal and has been criticised for this. In 2000, a revised version of the translation was brought out by Prof. Abdul Mannan Khan, Chairman of Islamic Research Institute (IRI), Dhaka, Bangladesh; he is also the editor-in-chief of the Pakistan chapter of Kitab-i-Kabir (published by Minhaj Publications). This new edition, known as "New Kabir", includes additional notes and annexures to correct errors and misprints found in previous editions.
